Haveli Shah, an affluent zamindar, lives in the village with his daughter and three sons. Of them, Ram and Lakshman are married, while Sukhi Ram is an idle bachelor. His daughter Laajo is in love with Pooran, the son of Hakeem Milkhi Ram. Their blissful lives are disrupted when Haveli Shah employs Sai Das as a servant and he immediately sets about provoking the family to fight amongst themselves.

Sai Das tells Haveli Shah to divide his property amongst his three sons for fear of his imminent death. Hakeem Milkhi Ram, keeping in mind his own interests, opposes the idea, drawing upon himself the ire of the three sons. Ram, Lakshman and Sukhi Ram thrash Pooran, unwilling to let him marry their sister. Despite the strife that breaks out, Haveli Shah heeds Sai’s advise and divides his property.

Once they have the money within their grasp, all three of them start mistreating their father. Laajo is treated badly by her sisters-in law, and forbidden from meeting Pooran. Haveli Shah watches helplessly, and finally leaves the house with Laajo. They settle in an abandoned hut outside the village.

To jolt her brothers out of their complacency, Laajo spreads rumours of hidden wealth owned by Haveli. Soon, the three brothers try to patch things up with their father, and take him and Laajo home. Laajo is married to Pooran. When the treasure chest is opened by the brothers, they are shocked to find it empty. Ram threatens to shoot Laajo and Haveli unless the promised wealth is handed over to him. He refuses to share the wealth with his brothers. In the chaos, he falls down the stairs and loses his eyesight. Laajo goes to the Durga temple to pray for Ram. His sight is restored, and the family reunites. Sai Das is thrown out of the village.
